How Fly Ash Is Collected

1.
Chunks of coal are pulverized in coal mills.
2.
Pulverized coal is pneumatically transported and blown into the boiler.
3.
The pulverized coal is burned and the inorganic inclusions (tiny bits of sand and rock) melt.
4.
These microscopic droplets of molten rock are carried out of the firing zone by the flue gas.
5.
While still suspended in the air, these spherical droplets solidify and become the "finely divided powdered residue" known as fly ash.
6.
The fly ash is collected in hoppers or silos and tested to determine which market will best utilize that product.
