Fly ash is classified as a Pozzolan: a mineral admixture and a supplementary cementitious material that provides concrete with performance benefits such as water tightness and long-term durability. Volcanic ash, similar to today’s fly ash in its chemistry, had been used as a supplementary cementitious material in concrete dating back to the Roman Empire. This natural Pozzolan was used in structures that have lasted for thousands of years.

Star Refined Pozzolan

Thermally Beneficiated Class F Fly Ash

STAR® Refined Pozzolan has applications ranging from ready-mix concrete to paving to precast products. Not only does STAR Refined Pozzolan exceed all the requirements for the most stringent specifications for fly ash used as a supplementary cementitious material, it also has superior air-entraining characteristics. Concrete producers can use the same dosage rate of air-entraining admixture in all of their concrete mixes – regardless of the amount of STAR Refined Pozzolan used in the mix design. These “transparent” air-entraining characteristics lower the concrete producer’s cost for quality control and reduce the amount of concrete rejected at the job site. It also promotes sustainable development by cutting down on the amount of new materials used in manufacturing. It’s recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as a post-industrial, pre-consumer recycled material, which means it can contribute toward LEED credits.
