Customized Solutions For Utilities
We have over 20 years' experience in operating thermal beneficiation facilities and are uniquely qualified to offer a wide range of solutions to remove and recycle coal ash for beneficial use. We can guide evaluation of sites to develop customized beneficiation solutions.
SEFA began operating the first thermal beneficiation plant for fly ash, a Carbon Burn Out (CBO) Plant, in 1999, which was built by the former South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) company in Eastover, South Carolina. A second CBO facility was designed, owned, and operated by SEFA in Georgetown, South Carolina. As it was evident the availability and quality of specification-grade fly ash was in decline, SEFA invested in developing beneficiation technologies. In 2007-2008, the company designed and built the first STAR Plant utilizing its proprietary thermal beneficiation process, STAR Technology. The STAR Process provided advantages over previous thermal beneficiation technologies, allowing SEFA to provide high-quality fly ash for recycled use. The second STAR Facility was built in 2012 and was operated and maintained by SEFA.
Another major achievement in thermal beneficiation technology was the development of the first STAR Facility to process both production ash and harvested coal ash. SEFA was the first company in the world processing harvested ash in commercial quantities with STAR Technology beginning in 2015. Material excavated from ponds was transformed to provide specification-grade fly ash for recycling into roads, bridges, dams, and buildings, improving their strength and durability.
SEFA offers multiple technologies today. Where harvested ash can be dried and screened to produce specification-grade material for use in concrete, we offer a complete system with screening, drying, treatment, storage, and loadout.
Since its founding, SEFA has been committed to customers’ success and environmental stewardship by maximizing the beneficial use of fly ash in environmentally sustainable ways. SInce 1999, SEFA has adapted and developed technologies in an effort to meet the demand for specification-grade material and provide the company’s ready-mixed concrete customers consistent material on a continual basis.
SEFA’s proprietary beneficiation technology is STAR Technology, in continuous operation since 2008. STAR Technology transforms coal ash from ponds, landfills, and production material into a consistent, high-quality product for the concrete industry and other industrial applications.
The process provides a consistent, low LOI material that meets or exceeds all specifications for additives in concrete. STAR Technology is a commercially-proven, sustainable solution to permanently remove coal ash from the environment.
